Intern Spotlight: Discover the Talents and Experiences of MeVitae’s Summer Interns

This summer, we had the pleasure of welcoming five bright students and recent graduates to MeVitae as part of our 8-week Summer Internship Program. All interns were brought to us through the SEPnet Program, with placements across various departments, from Sales to Technology. At Mevitae, we've been running our internship program for over five years, and it's been truly exciting to witness the incredible talent that has joined us each year. To give you a glimpse into this cohort’s journey, we asked each of our interns to share their experiences with us…

Liam Giles

Role: Project Delivery Assistant

Degree: BSc Theoretical Physics at the University of Sussex (just graduated)

I've been interning at MeVitae over the summer as a Project Delivery Assistant, my main focus has been working with LLMs and word embeddings to help drive sales, as well as integrating what I've built into a larger algorithm. I've massively expanded on the machine learning basics I became acquainted with at university and acquired some really valuable experience being exposed to backend development in a professional setting. Issues regarding cognitive bias in recruitment can and do affect everyone, so it's been rewarding to be able to work with an organisation whose values are so clearly positive and aligned with my own. I've had a lot of fun, everyone I've worked with has been incredibly supportive, and the internship has not only given me a platform to learn but has really affirmed that I want to take my career further in this direction. The work I've been doing has felt valuable throughout and I'm in an amazing position to take what I have learned and apply it both to personal projects and wherever my career takes me.

Zakariya Khaled

Role: Full-Stack Software Engineer

Degree: BSc Computer Science and Mathematics at Royal Holloway University (just graduated)

I have been interning at MeVitae as a Full-Stack Software Engineer! I've had the opportunity to develop important components for the Community Hub, an upcoming platform aimed at bringing with easy access to support articles, resources, and more for our products.

This internship has been a fantastic learning journey, allowing me to apply what I’ve learned over the course of my degree to real-world situations, as well as learning new things on top of that - I've gained so much insight into software engineering that I never expected!

As my internship wraps up, I will be continuing here at MeVitae as a full-time Full-Stack Software Engineer. I'm looking forward to finalising my current projects and facing any new challenges I will be tasked with. This is just the beginning of my career, and I can't wait to see what the future holds!

Samantha Sosome

Role: AI Researcher

Degree: BSc Physics, Astrophysics & Cosmology at the University of Portsmouth (just graduated)

As an AI Research Intern, I had the privilege of working on debiasing job descriptions using machine learning, specifically focusing on eliminating gendered language to make job postings more inclusive. Under the guidance of my manager, Jacob O'Toole, I was able to significantly strengthen my Python skills, which was instrumental in the success of my project. Jacob's mentorship was invaluable, and I’m grateful for his support in navigating the complexities of machine learning.

One of the highlights of my internship was the informal team barbeque event. Since we work remotely, this gathering was a rare but cherished opportunity to connect in person with my colleagues. The sense of camaraderie and closeness within our team was palpable, something that’s also fostered in our weekly Friday catchups. These regular meetings have been more than just updates; they’ve been a space where we celebrate successes, support one another and share our weekend plans.

As I look to the future, this experience has reinforced my commitment to championing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DE&I) in my professional life. I’m eager to continue advancing machine learning technology, using it as a tool to drive positive change in every organization I’m a part of. The work I’ve done at MeVitae has been both fulfilling and inspiring, and I’m excited to carry these lessons forward into my career.

Thank you for this incredible opportunity and for making my time at MeVitae so memorable.

Lewis Sword

Role: Machine Learning Engineer/Software Developer

Degree: PhD Theoretical and Mathematical Physics at Queen Mary University of London (just graduated)

I have been a data science Intern at MeVitae specialising in document parsing through machine learning (ML). In this role, I've developed ML models to enhance the detection and classification of information within CVs. By implementing techniques such as named entity recognition and binary classification, we have achieved improvements in both detection precision and recall. This experience has been incredibly rewarding, providing me with valuable exposure to diverse ML methodologies and deep insights into creating advanced data-driven solutions. It has also inspired me to further pursue a career in data science.

Aryan Bakhai

Role: Sales Intern

Degree: MSci Astrophysics at Royal Holloway University (just completed 2nd year)

My internship at MeVitae was within the sales department, but I had the opportunity to experience much more than just sales meetings. I was able to network, share my research and ideas for the future of the analytics product, create a podcast, and manage the production and execution of a Fairness in HR audit, during which I collated a set of vital questions organisations should be asking themselves.

This internship allowed me to dive deep into the space of DE&I, working toward a cause that benefits society. Throughout my time here, I have gained a strong understanding of project management, the importance of clear communication, and how to best connect with individuals - skills that will be invaluable in my future.

I am excited to take these experiences back to the third year of my MSci Astrophysics degree. I’ve found a morally beneficial industry that I am happy to stay connected with, and I look forward to re-joining the wonderful community at MeVitae as a part-time Assistant Sales Representative.
